Scanned Documents into Corporate Enterprise Content Management

January 15th, 2008 by Chris

Question: We scan articles from newspapers and would like to upload them to our corporate ECM. Can you recommend an automated way to do that?

Answer: Typically Enterprise Content Management (ECM) requires additional information about the scanned files. Using your example, you can consider adding document name, newspaper name, author, date publish, etc. This information will help users search on these fields to get precise results. To automate the process, you can use a cover page. You scan the cover page first follow by the article. The cover page will outline your required information such as document name, newspaper name, author, etc. The cover page can be printed or it can be designed as a handwritten form. Handwritten recognition requires ICR, while printed recognition requires OCR. At the end of the recognition process, the program can generate an XML file and a searchable PDF file. Both files can be automatically uploaded to your ECM using watched folder.

Extracting Handwritten Text from Scanned Documents

January 9th, 2008 by Chris

Question: Can you extract handwritten text from a scanned cover page? We are looking to extract this text on the captured documents and indexing certain information into a database. I suppose we need an ICR solution for this project.

Answer: Yes, we can provide an ICR solution to extract handwritten text. However, this is not an “out of the box” solution. ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition for handwritten text) rates are only about 30% reliable; whereas, OCR rates are typically, over 90%. With that in mind, in order to possess a working solution to the problem, you would need to designate certain areas for the text to be extracted, and also set up validation rules to improve the ICR recognition. There are many factors to consider, if you would like to discuss the problem, and solution further, please email proservices@cvisiontech.com

OCR for Xerox scanners

January 2nd, 2008 by Chris

Question: Does your OCR engine support Xerox scanners?

Answer: Yes, our OCR engine is compatible with Xerox scanners. If you are looking for an OCR download for a Xerox scanner I would suggest trying either PdfCompressor Professional or Desktop, both are equipped with OCR.

The Professional Version of PdfCompressor features improved color and bitonal compression, allowing for documents that are up to 100x smaller than their original. In addition to the compression results, the product has super-accurate OCR capabilities for over 60 languages.
The Desktop Version of PdfCompressor would also be a strong option for a Xerox OCR Download. The Desktop Edition is a “lite” alternative to the Professional Edition. It is designed to compress only a single document at a time, each of which does not exceed 100 pages. You can test out the OCR on this download as well.

We offer full tech support with our free 30 day evaluation of the Professional or the Desktop download. If you are interested in either product as a potential OCR Download, I have attached the link below.
