Question: I need to compress my PDF files. My company deals with many PDFs that need compressing, we find the PDFs difficult to access and transmit. Can I test your “PDF Compress utility?”

Answer: Yes, we have a free 30-day evaluation of our PdfCompressor product; you can test compressing your own PDF files. Many of clients require compression for the same reason you discussed, uncompressed PDFs are slow to email and open.

Batch PDF Compression in Multi-threading mode

September 11th, 2008 by Chris

Question: Does the API support batch PDF compression? I have a folder of PDFs, I would like to process them and produce a single PDF for each one processed? I know I can loop through the folder and process one at a time but I’m not taking advantage of multi-threading. Can this be done and still be able to take advantage of the compressors multi-threading capability?

Answer: The multithreading is controlled at the command line. Then the appropriate flag is passed multithreading will kick in. The flag for multi-threading is “-mt”. Please add that flag to the command line and that should fix the problem.

Create PDF

December 29th, 2007 by Chris

Question: While creating PDFs using CVISION’s PdfCompressor software I noticed a file called “Thumb.db” appeared. I was wondering what this file was and how it was created? Can it be safely deleted?

Answer: PdfCompressor is designed to convert and create PDF, TIFF, and JPEG files into compressed, web-optimized and text-searchable PDF files. Thumb.db is created by windows in order to cache the thumbnails of images in that particular folder. These files can in fact be deleted safely.

If you want to disable the files from being created, you can accomplish this by opening an explorer window by clicking: Tools->Folder Options->View->and select “Do not cache thumbnails”

JPEG or PDF?

April 25th, 2007 by Chris

Question: My firm scans countless documents daily. At the moment, the output files of our scanners are JPEGs. Will converting company documents to PDFs be more beneficial than keeping our documents in JPEGs?

Answer: We come across companies all the time with similar questions regarding what output to scan to. As document imaging professionals, we find that in most to all cases, it is best to convert company documents to PDFs. Some of the advantages of converting to PDF opposed to JPEG below:

* Text Searchability with text within the document using OCR
* Compression up to 1/100th the size of JPEG for color files
* Editing using readily available tools for PDFs.
* Web optimization allowing downloads to open immediately
* Viewing from any of 500,000,000 computers
* Metadata with info about the document travels with the document
* Portability to any OS/Hardware
* Additional file control using advanced tools.

PDF Images

January 27th, 2007 by Chris

Question: Recently, I have scanned many color documents. When I see it on the computer, the color quality is good. However, once I print them, they come out blurry? Is that supposed to happen?

Answer: No, that is not supposed to happen. PdfCompressor’s specialty is compression of scanned color documents. We can compress the size of scanned color documents up to 100x smaller while maintaining file quality. The PdfCompressor with the same file generates an intelligent scanned image document with an embedded OCR layer and full text searchability. The most likely reason for the blurriness is that the PdfCompressor uses state-of-the art technology; however, most printers do not have the latest technology. The remedy for this is to consistently update your printer with newest technology.
