The Intelligent Character Recognition

The ICR software is often associated as an extension of the Optical Character Recognition. Generally, the concept of both the ICR and the OCR is the same. They are created with the intention that they will be converting the data from paper forms into electronic formats. The main difference between the ICR software and the OCR is that it focuses on the handwritten texts rather than the printed fonts. The Intelligent Character Recognition identifies the printed fonts but is capable of reading the handwritten words on the documents as well. This is why, most of the time, the ICR software is considered as an advanced format of the OCR as this has this added feature. Eventually, the ICR software can learn from reading the documents. This self learning feature is considered by many as that ability to recognize new words and fonts and stores them as knowledge in its own database. Consequently, it allows itself to be updated constantly based on the newer versions.

Forms Processing

How Does It Work?

The ICR software works with several scanning systems. These engines are usually equipped with various data and knowledge that will store the data that is extracted from the forms. The usual technology used by the ICR software is the hybrid approach wherein the voting system sets in. This is usually done when the software can match the words against the stored library by comparing it to other versions in the database. Once it has correctly matched, the ICR software will show the result based on its idea of which is the best match.

The Limitations

The ICR software is only 97 percent accurate. Unlike the OCR systems that boast of a 99 percent accuracy count, the ICR only has this ratio. Most would associate this low percentage because of the dependability of the software on the handwriting. If the written words are not that clear, it would often result to errors on the data gathering. This type of software is mostly used on surveys, and form feeds as they require only a few data errors. To use this on delicate operational matters, the ICR software may read the handwritten words but additional checking systems must be done to ensure the integrity of the data gathered.
