What is file compression?
File compression engines compress documents, retaining the content, but reducing the space required to store it. For compressing many files or documents at the same time, which is done mainly in big organizations, batch file compression is used. It is also possible to have one file converted to another format. This means that a file in batch document format can be converted to PDF format and vice versa.

The computer files are coded in such a way that there are spaces left between the coded segments, which is one of the causes for the large size of files. Added to this is the repetition of the same redundant information. File compression engines compress files by removing multiple instances of occurrence of data with a single instance. The file compression engine does so by inserting a reference to the information that was repeated.
