Why People Use OCR Engine
An OCR engine is used in the process of conversion of a paper document into an electronic document. Today information is no longer stored in paper documents. In government offices as well as business organizations, hard copy paper documents are rarely used. Information is stored in electronic documents, which is a better substitute. These electronic documents are either generated in the electronic world by typing in information or are produced by converting a hard copy document. When the latter method is used to produce electronic documents, the process involves the use of a scanner and an OCR. The scanner captures an image of the hard copy document and the OCR transforms that image into a machine editable and searchable electronic document.
Details of the OCR's Functions
OCR or Optical Character Recognition is a branch of optical technology that is used in a device of the same name that recognizes characters in the digital image of a text document scanned by a scanner. The OCR process is done because the output of scanning is not a proper electronic document. The scanner only produces an image and the computer regards it as such. Even if that image contains text, the computer cannot read from that text because it does not recognize its characters. When an OCR processes such a scanned document, the result is a fully machine editable electronic document. This electronic document can be understood by any text processor application and can be edited by it. Moreover, if the scanned output is a PDF document then the OCR will produce a document whose content can be searched for specific text portions.
How One Can Get an OCR Software
Anyone can buy an OCR software from any website that sells them. There are several such websites owned by software manufacturers. In some of these sites one may even find free OCR engines. These free OCR engines can either be freewares or sharewares. A shareware is not absolutely free because after a limited period of time one will not be able to use it anymore unless one pays for it.
