Reducing PDF fonts: how and why?
Fonts can add 40 kilobytes of data each to the PDF file. Since a PDF embeds all used fonts, that can be quite a load. The best way to reduce font size is to use as few fonts as possible. Refrain from using all those cool wingdings it might not be so cool when it takes your viewer 20 minutes to download your awesome PDF document and they give up in frustration. Also, when embedding fonts, do not embed the whole font family, but just those glyphs that are actually used in the PDF file.
PDF versions: how they impact upon PDF size?
PDF is in its 9th incarnation right now. Adobe has gone through a lot of changes and added sophistications as the years have gone by. One of the places where it has added to its sophistication is in the PDF optimizer tool. This has been enhanced to such a degree in more recent versions as compared to older ones, and so many compressing features have been added to the utility that in todays latest versions, a PDF optimization process can reduce the PDF size immensely. So try and use the latest versions of Adobe Acrobat.
