Scanned PDF Compression
Portable Document Format, the full form of PDF can be called as a container that holds text, pictures, metadata and other file formats and it plays an important role while scanning a document and sending it, especially through e-mail. You must be aware that PDF is the common output for today's scanners. When we scan paper documents or graphics, it results in very large PDF files which are difficult to handle and maintain, as they eats up a lot of memory space. We can compress the PDF files and make these files easy to store, easy to access and easy to transfer too. There are different PDF compression techniques to ensure that you have the smallest files possible.
Methods of Carrying Out Scanned PDF Compression
Most of the scan software usually uses the JPEG image format to generate PDF files. It was a compression technique which was initially created to compress and view still digital images. But you should know that if the document is greatly compressed then there is slight blurriness in the quality of text due to loss of data. Nowadays, the JPEG2000 Part 1 is used, which is an up gradation of the JPEG image format. It suits the compression of still images but it is very helpful for scanned documents. The plus point is that JPEG2000 Part 1 uses wavelets and this produces a better image quality of scanned documents.
Tips and Tricks
TIFF and FAX Group 4 are two compression techniques that have gained popularity. The quality is maintained in a TIFF compression technique, and FAX Group 4 is used with fax machines and mostly black and white documents. But this technique converts even the pictures to black and white format. If you do not mind the color then you can opt for this compression technique. JPIG2 is an improved version of the FAX Group 4, and it works best for scanned text. It compresses recurring alphabets and maintains the quality of the content too. MRC (Mixed Raster Content) is a mixed method of compression that used different compression techniques on different parts of the content. This method is widely accepted and gaining popularity because it enables the individual to combine the best techniques and maintain images as well as texts. You can choose any of the above methods depending upon your requirements.
