What is a JP2 File?
JP2 stands for JPEG-2000, a standard image file format for image storage and web publishing. JP2 files have some useful properties, but there are often problems with slow and lossy compression, and as a result JP2 files are not commonly used. Compression is important because image files tend to be large, and reducing the file size makes them much more convenient for storage and sharing. Lossy compression means that some information is lost in the process, which can be a major problem when all the contents of an image are important.
Converting a JP2 File to PDF Format
PDF format, on the other hand, can be much easier to work with, and does not have the problems that JP2 files face with compression. As a result, it is often useful to convert a JP2 file to PDF and then compress the PDF file, instead of trying to compress the JP2 file directly. PDF format has lossless compression, in which all of the data is preserved. With the right conversion software, this two-step process can actually involve less hassle than trying to compress a JP2 file directly. In addition, PDF files are universally used, and so are better for sharing and editing.
