The JPEG2000 format is an image compression standard that was developed in 2000 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which also developed the original JPEG format in 1991. The JPEG2000 format has a variety of applications ranging from image storage to PDF compression. The JPEG2000 format can be used for purely lossless as well as lossy image compression.
Advantages of the JPEG2000 Format
One of the main advantages that JPEG2000 has over JPEG is the fact that it allows for completely lossless compression. This makes it suitable for image storage and compression when fidelity retention is important. Images saved in the lossless JPEG2000 format are saved as .JPF files; JPEG2000 is also used as a lossless compression standard for PDF files. When maximum compression is more of a priority than fidelity, JPEG2000 can be used for lossy compression. This flexibility gives the JPEG2000 format a strong advantage over JPEG.
PdfCompressor and JPEG2000
CVISION's PDF compression software, PdfCompressor, utilizes the JPEG2000 format for lossless PDF compression. Thanks to the JPEG2000 format's excellent lossless compression capabilities, PdfCompressor can achieve high compression rates with no loss of fidelity.
