Extracting Handwritten Text from Scanned Documents

January 9th, 2008 by Chris

Question: Can you extract handwritten text from a scanned cover page? We are looking to extract this text on the captured documents and indexing certain information into a database. I suppose we need an ICR solution for this project.

Answer: Yes, we can provide an ICR solution to extract handwritten text. However, this is not an “out of the box” solution. ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition for handwritten text) rates are only about 30% reliable; whereas, OCR rates are typically, over 90%. With that in mind, in order to possess a working solution to the problem, you would need to designate certain areas for the text to be extracted, and also set up validation rules to improve the ICR recognition. There are many factors to consider, if you would like to discuss the problem, and solution further, please email proservices@cvisiontech.com
