Character Recognition Software

August 19th, 2009 by Marsha

Question:
How does character recognition software work? What does its accuracy depend on?

Answer:
Character recognition software, better known as optical character recognition or OCR, recognizes the shapes formed by outlines of text characters and identifies the letters and words that are formed. The accuracy of the software depends both on the quality of the product and on the quality of the text itself. If the outlines of the letters are unclear, or if there is additional “noise” on the page, the software will be less effective than when working with a crystal-clear document. Under ideal conditions, and with a high-quality product, you can achieve near-perfect accuracy. If you are looking for accuracy, I would recommend you try Maestro Recognition Server, which has the most accurate OCR available in the English language.
