Watch Folder Capabilities

April 24th, 2007 by Chris

Question: I’ve set up a Job to watch a folder and delete the source after compressing; it’s also overwriting existing files. The job seems to work just fine. However when I attempt to edit the configuration file I get Error 76 Path not found and when I click OK the application just closes. This message is generated whether the service is running, stopped or paused. Is it possible to modify an existing job or does it need to be recreated with the altered parameters. Would I be better off setting a job like this up from the command line and running it as a scheduled task?

Answer: The Watch Folder uses the watchfolder.cfg file as the configuration file, this file most definitely can be modified once the service is stopped from the Windows Services. When you have completed editing the configuration file please make sure to restart the service from the Windows Services window, and the changes should apply successfully, if they have been entered correctly.

You can also recreate the WatchFolder.cfg by using the GUI and selecting the options that you need. Once you have done so, please hit “Run Job” to apply the new settings to the watchfolder.cfg.

Watched Folder/Batched Compression Logging Capabilities

January 14th, 2007 by Chris

Question: Are there metrics or logging that can be performed by PdfCompressor? I am interested in capturing the Start Time, End Time, Page Count, and Success Status for all of the files that get run through the watched folder or in batch compression. Is this possible?

Answer: For watched folder, watchedfolder.log provides some of this information. It reports the time and success status of each file compressed, but there is only one time reported (the time it finished compressing). The number of pages compressed is not reported in the watchedfolder.log; this is provided separately in the audit log (if it’s turned on).

The audit log reports the time completed, number of pages compressed, and optionally a client code for each file compressed. To enable the audit log, you have to specify the “-config filename” flag and have at least the following in the config file:

See Attached File: logging-configuration.txt

The audit log can be turned on via the GUI as well by choosing “Log Files” from the Options menu. (Although it indicates that the audit log is available for batch compression only, this is no longer accurate.)

Watched Folder Feature

December 7th, 2006 by Chris

Question: Can the watched folder feature be run across the network?

Answer: PdfCompressor allows users to watch folders locally as well as across their network. In order to ensure this works properly, users may need to manually adjust the login settings for the watched folder service. If users are failing to get the watched folder to work, this is likely the case.

To set this up properly, create the same login on all machines that will be servinv this purpose. This will grant full permission to the folders that users will be utilizing. Once you have done so, please use those credentials that you have created to start the “Watched Folder” service.
