Question:
My company has a huge number of PDF files to compress, and is looking into a PDF compression server. Will your software enable us to set up a PDF compression server?
Answer:
Yes. PdfCompressor can be run on a server, offering all of the benefits of server-based PDF compression. Having a PDF compression server allows you to fully automate the process of PDF compression using watched folders, which means that the PDF compression software on the server watches specific folders on the server or on other machines networked to it. If a document is scanned into one of these folders, or if a PDF file is placed into one of them, it will be automatically compressed by your PDF compression server. PdfCompressor can also automatically use OCR to make your compressed PDF files text-searchable, or to turn them into editable text documents. A free trial version can be downloaded by visiting CVISION’s downloads page, linked below.

Question: I have purchased and installed PdfCompressor and set up a watched folder and it worked fine. But I rebooted the computer and the watched folder isn’t working anymore. How can I make it so the watched folder settings stay operational?
Answer: The Watch Folder runs as a service and can be setup to startup automatically. To accomplish this simply browse to the Windows “Services” list and locate the ”CVISION Compression Service” and set that to startup automatically.

Question: In what order are watched folders processed? Is it the order in which they appear in the watched folder configuration file? Alphabetical? I’d like to make sure one specific user has anything in their watched folder is processed ahead of anyone else.
Answer: Watch Folders are set up to process in the order that they appear in the watch folder configuration file. If you would like to test PdfCompressor, I have included the link below:

Question: I am having trouble getting PdfCompressor to have its output folder be a network drive. I know I have full rights to the network drives. Do you know what the problem might be?
Answer: This issue seems to be caused by the way the watch folder is setup. I notice that in your “watchfolder.cfg” file the paths are referred to with a mapped drive. Please either reconstruct your settings or edit the watchfolder.cfg file to use the UNC path instead of the mapped drives that are being used at this time. You may have other things that are preventing you from successfully starting up the watch folder, therefore if the above doesn’t fix the issue please feel free to contact me for additional support.

Question: Recently, we bought the PdfCompressor. We have many scanned documents on one of our computers. Can we put these scanned documents in one place where it can compress automatically?
Answer: PdfCompressor has a feature which is called a “watch folder” which runs as a service on a particular machine or server. The folders that PdfCompressor watches could be a network folder/s or a local folder/s. Once files are dropped into these folders our compressor would automatically grab the files and compress them.
Moreover, watchedfolder.log provides reports the time and success status of each file compressed, but there is only one time reported (the time it finished compressing). The number of pages compressed is not reported in the watchedfolder.log; this is provided separately in the audit log (if it’s turned on).
The audit log reports the time completed, number of pages compressed, and optionally a client code for each file compressed. To enable the audit log, you have to specify the “-config filename” flag and have at least the following in the config file:

Question: Do you offer batch OCR process capabilities. I want to OCR large volumes of scanned files.
Answer: Yes, we do offer batch OCR capabilities. Most of our corporate clients are utilizing our batch OCR mode. To further automate the OCR & compression processes, PdfCompressor also offers watch folder capabilities.
I have attached a link to download a free trial of PdfCompressor with OCR.

Question: We purchased PdfCompressor application some time back. It was installed onto a server so multiple uses could use it for compression & OCR of our scanned documents. How does a workstation user run the application that is installed on the server?
Answer: PdfCompressor has a feature which is called a “watch folder” which runs as a service on a particular machine or server. The folders that PdfCompressor watches could be a network folder/s or a local folder/s. In either case, any of the users that need to compress files would only need access to these folders. Once files are dropped into these folders our compressor would automatically grab the files and compress them.
Please note that we have the “Watch Folder” documented in our Help Options, a full HTML help facility is provided to the user with the install of PdfCompressor. It can be accessed from the “CVision” folder in your Start menu as well as from the program itself. We also have a BLOG that we host and update a regular basis

Question: In PdfCompressor Professional edition, is there a limit to the number of watch folders that can be created and run concurrently?
Answer: There is not a limit to the number of watch folders in PdfCompressor. However, please keep in mind specifying more than the system can handle can significantly deteriorate performance.

Question: Is it possible to set the Watch Folder service to watch all subdirectories within a folder or does each directory need to be specified individually?
Answer: At this time the “Watch Folder” does not function recursively, one has to add each folder to be watched separately. We are considering adding a feature that will support recursive watch folders in our future releases.
Once we add this feature everyone who is enrolled for maintenance will be able to upgrade to support this feature. This goes for any type of upgrade when enrolled for maintenance.
