Question: I have another question about the software I was wondering if you could help me with. We have a need to OCR and convert .doc files into .pdf. Is this possible with PDF compressor? Is there a module we can purchase to accomplish this?
Answer: When considering files to OCR for text-searchability, .doc file are usually already OCR’d since it is an electronic file, so I am not sure how OCR would come in useful for .doc file types. At this time we are able to take the following file types as input TIFF, PDF, JPEG, BMP, GIF, JP2, J2K, JPC, PNG, TGA, WMF, PCX, ICO, PNM - .doc is not among those file types.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us. If you are interested in testing our software, click the link below:

Question: I downloaded an evaluation version of Maestro Recognition Server to try the OCR scan feature. I am trying to scan a single printed document into an electronic file, but I cannot figure out how to do it. Please let me know if Maestro Recognition Server will allow me to do that, or if not what product do I need?
Answer: Thank you for contacting CVISION Technologies. Maestro is a tool that allows users to take any of TIFF, PDF, JPEG, BMP, GIF, and PNG files and convert them to searchable PDFs. This tool allows you to OCR your files but it is not something that allows you to actually scan them.
If you would like to download Maestro again, I have attached the link below:

Question: We are scanning our paper with the output file being a TIFF, we would like to take the TIFF documents and convert them to searchable PDFs. Do you provide a solution to convert scanned documents into searchable PDF files?
Answer: Yes, we have two products that will convert your captured documents into searchable PDFs.
There is PdfCompressor, which in addition to creating searchable PDFs with OCR, also compresses scanned documents to a fraction of their size. In addition to PdfCompressor, we have Maestro which produces searchable PDFs with our super-accurate OCR.
We offer a free trial of both of these software products; I have attached the link below:

Question: We are encountering slowness with the process of converting TIFF to PDF which is done by CVista PdfCompressor. Last night, our TIFF files for conversion reached up to 435 files and some of them have been waiting to be converted for more than 4 hours. As of today, the slowness is still there, thus we decided to manually move TIFF files for conversion to the waiting folder so PdfCompressor can accommodate the files and convert them faster. But, this is not the normal scenario.
Answer: The processing of file would depend on the number of pages the document has. If the document has many pages and in addition each page is being OCRed it would cause a slow down because the engine is working on OCRing that many pages in just one document.
Are you performing OCR? What mode of OCR are you using? How many pages per document are you processing.
You can speed up PdfCompressor by using less intense settings. If that is not an option for you I would suggest using PdfCompressor on a machine that has multiple processors (4 or 8 processors) and run PdfCompressor in multithreading mode allowing you to process as many files as processors at the same time.
Another choice would be to have PdfCompressor running on two different machines and utilizing the processing power on 2 machines, but once again the more processors you have the more files you will be able to process at the same time.
How many processors does your current machine have?

There is a general tradeoff between OCR speed and accuracy. The accuracy is generally a function of the OCR engine speed. It is usually possible to obtain greater OCR accuracy by running the engine longer, or by deploying more OCR engines. The problem, however, becomes one of diminishing returns.
Let’s say the OCR engine has to run twice as long to diminish the remaining error rate by half. Say, for example, there’s an error rate of 2% when the OCR engine is run in normal mode, which might have a processing speed of 3 seconds per page. There might also be an accurate mode, with an error rate of 1% and a processing speed of 6 seconds per page. Let’s also assume there is a super-accurate mode with an error rate of 0.5 % and a processing speed of 12 seconds per page. This might correspond in some systems to the number of OCR engines that are run.
In any event, even assuming that there are as many as 10 OCR engines, or super-accurate modes, for most companies there is a point of diminishing returns, that is, a point at which it is not worth slowing down the OCR processing rate any more, even if the tradeoff is greater accuracy.
So what often needs to be established, sometimes empirically through trial and error, is what degree of accuracy is required for a given Company? How accurate is accurate enough? What processing rate is acceptable within a given workflow?
Sometimes greater OCR accuracy can be achieved without increasing processing time. This often involves either some form learning or optimizing for a given application domain.
