OCR Language

July 23rd, 2009 by Marsha

Question:
Can OCR identify language characters out of context, or are there different OCR programs for different languages? Do I have to buy two separate programs if I work in English and Spanish, or can I use one for both?

Answer:
To be effective, OCR needs to view characters in the context of a word, so OCR is definitely specific to individual languages. However, you do not need to buy a separate OCR program for every language that you work with. Instead, you can find a good program with OCR capabilities in multiple languages, so that you are able to handle all the languages that you use and even be prepared to process new ones if necessary. CVISION’s OCR tool, called Maestro Recognition Server, supports over 60 languages. Tests have shown that Maestro’s English OCR is the most accurate one available on the market. You can try Maestro for free to see if it is what you need.
