Answer: Optical character recognition, or OCR as it is commonly abbreviated, is software that can convert scanned documents into text editable and searchable files. Scans are only image files of the original document which means you cannot perform text functions such as search and copy/paste on them. This becomes very disadvantageous when you have to work with multiple scans and files. OCR makes scans and files easier to work with by converting them to text.
