Extracting Handwritten Text from Scanned Documents

January 9th, 2008 by Chris

Question: Can you extract handwritten text from a scanned cover page? We are looking to extract this text on the captured documents and indexing certain information into a database. I suppose we need an ICR solution for this project.

Answer: Yes, we can provide an ICR solution to extract handwritten text. However, this is not an “out of the box” solution. ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition for handwritten text) rates are only about 30% reliable; whereas, OCR rates are typically, over 90%. With that in mind, in order to possess a working solution to the problem, you would need to designate certain areas for the text to be extracted, and also set up validation rules to improve the ICR recognition. There are many factors to consider, if you would like to discuss the problem, and solution further, please email proservices@cvisiontech.com

OCR & ICR for Mailroom Automation

October 10th, 2007 by Chris

Question: I am interested in OCRing packing slips in our mailroom. The mailroom receives & sends out hundreds of packing slips daily, we need to OCR the documents, and potentially ICR, some of the handwritten text on the slips as well. We then want to compress the documents, and convert them to PDFs. Ideally, we are looking to automate, or semi-automate this process. Is this a solution you can offer? I see you provide solutions for OCR, and ICR, as well as compression and PDF conversion.

Answer: The project you are describing appears to be something we can handle. If you were simply looking to scan, compress, OCR, and convert the documents to PDFs, it would be a more straightforward solution.

Automation and handwritten recognition is more involved. Automation requires OCR and logical OCR. Automation, means extracting field information from the scanned document. Such information can be name, department, address, amount, PO number, etc. Handwritten recognition requires ICR (recognition of handwritten text), and validation rules. Validation is done using custom dictionaries, corporate database and filed level validation.

We encounter more and more clients looking to digitize, and optimize their mailroom process through automation However, each project is very distinct; one must examine the documents for OCR and ICR, to develop a recognition process. Typically, ICR recognition rates are much lower than OCR rates.

In order to properly address the question, we will need more information about the specifics of the project. Please email: proservices@cvisiontech.com to discuss further.

Indexing handwritten forms with ICR

September 11th, 2007 by Chris

Question: Our company processes a large number of handwritten forms daily, we would like a solution to scan and index designated fields within the forms. Do you offer a solution for indexing handwritten forms? Can we automate this process?

Answer: We specialize in handwritten recognition. In order for us to move forward, we need see the forms to determine the best ICR approach. ICR yields less than reliable recognition rates than OCR (recognition of typed text). Therefore, to improve the ICR recognition we need to validate the information. The more we know about the form and the application, the higher the recognition rate will be.

OCR ICR (Hand-Written Recognition)

June 5th, 2007 by Chris

Question: We started using CVsta PdfCompressor today and noticed that it wasn’t picking up handwritten print. I’ve attached some print we tried to capture (the second “AR06_A-Z_01″). It’s highlighting it but it’s not coming up in a search. If you could let us know us to troubleshoot this, that would be great.

Answer: Our current release of PdfCompressor does not pick up hand-written text, however, PdfCompressor 4.0 will have ICR (hand-written text) capabilities. PdfCompressor 4.0 will be available sometime in the 3Q, 2007.
