PDF File Compressor

June 30th, 2009 by Chris

Question:
What kind of compression rates does PDF file compressor software have? I’m considering purchasing a PDF file compressor, but want to know if PDF file compressors actually can achieve high compression rates.

Answer:

The rate of compression that a PDF file compressor can achieve differs drastically from product to product. I can only speak for CVISION’s PdfCompressor, which can compress a color PDF file to 1% of its original size. For this reason, it is the leading PDF file compressor on the market. However, you can download a free trial version and see what results it has for the files you are looking to compress.

Below is a link to our downloads page where you will be able to download the trial version of our PDF file compressor, PdfCompressor.

OCR TIFF

June 26th, 2009 by Chris

Question:
Is there a way to OCR TIFF files to make them searchable? Most of our scanned documents are stored as TIFF files, and we want to be able to search them.

Answer:
Yes, you can certainly OCR TIFF files. The ability to OCR TIFFs is in pretty high demand, for exactly the reason you stated: many users have document scans saved as TIFFs. Good OCR software should be able to handle TIFF files. CVISION’s Maestro Recognition Server can OCR TIFF files, and will convert them to searchable PDFs. The advantage to this is that PDF files are generally smaller than TIFF files, and are also very portable, meaning that they can be viewed on any computer regardless of its operating system.

Best OCR Program

June 26th, 2009 by Chris

Question:
I’m looking into an OCR program for my company’s 200,000 or so PDF documents. What is the best OCR program available? Obviously, I’m looking for something that can handle a large document volume.

Answer:
In determining the best OCR program for your needs, it sounds like two factors will be important: efficiency and accuracy; accuracy because inaccurate OCR is pretty much useless, and efficiency because you have a large number of PDF documents on which you need to use the OCR program. I can honestly say that CVISION Technologies’ OCR program, Maestro Recognition Server, is powered by the most accurate OCR engine available. It is also designed for large batch processing, and is capable of running its OCR program on approximately three pages per second. Does this make it the best OCR program available? We like to think so, but you can decide if you think it is the best OCR program yourself by downloading the free trial version.

The free trial version of Maestro Recognition Server, our best OCR program, is available at the link below.

Best Free OCR

June 23rd, 2009 by Chris

Question:
I’m trying to find out what the best free OCR available is. I want to download free OCR software to try it out, but don’t know what’s good and what’s not.

Answer:

There are two important factors to consider when trying to determine the best free OCR software: speed and accuracy. Some free OCR software is so inaccurate that all it does is give you a garbled mess of text that is impossible to work with, and is very tedious to use. CVISION’s OCR engine has scored the best on several accuracy tests, and is also very efficient. There are two free versions of our OCR software: an online tool and a trial version of our Maestro Recognition Server. These are your best bet when it comes to free OCR. I’ve included a link to our downloads page below so you can decide for yourself whether or not it is the best free OCR.

June 23rd, 2009 by Chris

Question:
I realize that your software can OCR PDF files, but can it handle batches of them, such as all of the files in a directory? I have a ton of files to run OCR on, do you provide PDF batch OCR tools?

Answer:
PDF batch OCR tools are a common request. It’s very time consuming if you have a lot of files and your PDF OCR software doesn’t have a batch mode. Our Maestro Recognition Server is a server based PDF OCR tool, and is capable of handling large batches of PDF files at once. It also includes watched folder capabilities, which means you can have it monitor specified folders, and when a new file is placed in one have it automatically run its OCR tool on it.
